About the Zoom Festival

The Zoom Festival in Rijeka is a result of the wish to create a unique festival in this region, a festival that will meet the needs of local audiences for a diverse, quality art programme. The focus of the festival is those works of art that are difficult to assign to any specific art field and works that combine different techniques, methods and expressions. In other words it will be a festival of intermedial art. Furthermore, each festival will focus on one author and his works, thus hoping to give a better insight into the author’s works and how they significantly mark the present moment. This year the author in focus is Janez Janša (Slovenia). The festival will be accompanied by the PSi conference, which will host world-leading theatrologists.

AKTO
is a regional festival for contemporary arts which includes visual arts, performing arts, music and theory of culture. The main objective of Akto Festival is to open the cultural frameworks of a modern society through "recomposing" and redefining them in a new context. The program of the festival is based on two concepts.

THE FIRST CONCEPT is space/location.
Locations have been transformed in terms of their previous meanings. The basic idea of the festival is art pieces to come out of the standard location (galleries, museums, theatres) used for presenting art, and their setting up in new location.
Re-moving of the pieces into new location transforms the piece itself (according to the parameter space).

THE SECOND CONCEPT is the topic of the festival.
The topic of Akto_5 festival is Weddings.
The artistic pieces (according to the parameter weddings) are going to be presented in two categories: artistic pieces that have wedding as a basic starting point and pieces that are represent a transformation of an already finished artistic forms.

Two parameters cause the transformation, the new space and the topic of the festival. The "new" act is being transformed in relation to its basic form. The "new" piece is transformed from its basic form. It has new statics and dynamics.

The three main parameters of the festival, space, topic, transformation define the motives to make an artistic piece, which are not formal nor stylistic, but are personal and emotional, precisely defined from the context in which they are made.

Zadar snova festival was founded in 1997 with a mission to provide an up to date art experience. It emphasizes on modern theatre, dance and music productions, art performances and challenges in fusions of arts and media. Festival has a history of presenting and supporting local independent artists, has produced a number of own and collaborative productions and is a member of regional and international culture networks.

In an 8-day period from 7 to 14 of August, the Festival presents selections of internationally renowned authors according to a principle of ultimate openness towards the format of artistic message. In a blend of modern arts and ancient Dalmatian settings gives a full focus on the content of artistic idea while supporting innovative forms of its expression.

The festival is run by an independent culture organization Zadar snova and program is made possible thanks to the City of Zadar and support of the Ministry of Culture of RoC and the Zadar County.

Three performances and a lecture

A lecture about Henrik Hedinge’s performance art combined with three performances about gender and stereotypes.

Henrik Hedinge started working with performance in connection with sports and land art in Sweden. With furher performance work around in Europe new issues around media and popular culturure were explored. The period in Europe lead to a one year period of performance work in Latin Amerika with fruity torture, strawberry football, lucha libre and violent banana amputations. Now he is back in Europe with a new serier of performances - GenderFlux.

Have participated in exhibitions with own performance material at galleries, museums and cultural centres in Brazil, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Paraguay and Slovenia.

Šukarova and Eagly met in 2006, when they collaborated with Yoshiko Chuma (USA) on the performance A Page Out of Order. The two artists are eager to build upon this foundation by researching their common choreographic interests. This performance in Skopje marks the first stage of their common research process.

In Norse mythology, the Fields of Ida exist after one world is destroyed and a new one is created. The fields are a halfway place, a way-station between worlds, both an ending and a beginning. This dance takes shape in that dark place.

Project is organized by Lokomotiva- Centre for New Initiatives in Arts and Culture. Project manager - Biljana Tanurovska Kjulavkovski.

Fields of Ida is commissioned by Dance Theater Workshop’s Commissioning and Creative Residency Programme with support from the Jerome Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Jerome Robbins Foundation.

Production of IT is supported by the Swiss Cultural Programme in the Western Balkan and EU Programme, Culture 2007-20103 in the frame of the research programme of Nomad Dance academy and the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Macedonia.

What determines if one is alive? And quite the opposite: how does a body without life act? How does a body striving for life behave? What makes one human? What makes oneself a particular self?
What makes me – me?

Here all of these questions appear, constantly dissolving into the state of ‘in between’: a state of being in between death and life, in between reality and illusion, in between being a star and a no-body.

During the period of Incubator the group Notions will collaborate with the musicologist, dramaturge and theoretician of performing arts Bojana Cvejić.

Cultural Center Magacin u Kraljevića Marka in Belgrade will host on December 18, 19 and 20, 2009 the working meetings and methodological laboratory conducted by Bojana Cvejić, co-editor of the lexicon of poetic terms of East Dance Academy. Participants in this program are Belgrade- and Skopje-based members of the group Notions, operating as part of the project Deschooling Classroom (2009/10): Milena Bogavac, Dragana Bulut, Bojan Đorđev, Siniša Ilić, Milan Marković, Ljiljana Tasić, Borislav Krmov, Ivana Vaseva, Elena Veljanovska and Biljana Tanurovska.

This program aims at connecting the two projects, presenting the members of Notions with the already accomplished methodology of the EDA lexicon (editorial work, selection of terms, including their respective theoretization) and, in the following months (December-January), with direct involvement in collective writing of selected contributions to the lexicon, with advice and assistance from Bojana Cvejić and Ana Vujanović. In a future perspective, this cooperation should help the group develop its own glossary of terms.

The East Dance Academy Lexicon of Poetic Terms responds to the need for conceiving new and existing, but re-invested terms employed in self-definition and self-determination of the artistic practice (notably in performing arts) and cultural production of former Yugoslavia in a broader sense, from the 1960s onwards, comprising terms and notions derived from artistic practice and poetics, as well as criticism and theory at work. Its terms and notions result from a conjugation between theory and art in this specific cultural domain. They are more effective in propelling and conceiving tools for future art works then in servicing subsequent interpretations of already historicized phenomena.

We compare the logic of notion-building to a ‘parallel slalom’. We slant down the steep slopes wavering between flags, each of them carrying at least two mutually referring notions pertaining to poetics and theory, philosophy, or history of ideas. Our aim is to demonstrate that discourse dwells on art’s autonomous conceptual imagination, rather than, according to the negative tagging of contemporary practices, that art represents (and ‘leeches’) theory.

Our preferences focus on the artistic practices in former Yugoslavia; however, the featured terms transcend the borders of the region, disclosing transversal intersections and conceptual and political feedback between the artists, beyond the divisions center/margin, East-West etc. Accordingly, the ’strategically’ chosen title East Dance Academy aspires at autonomization of the position claiming more than historical-cultural-political goals. It is not about the East, or about Dance, or about Academy; nevertheless, they are all interpellated.

The outline of the working sessions in Belgrade:

December 18: Introduction to the Glossary of Poetic Terms: analysis of selected terms based on previously read essays; formulating the terms for further elaboration

December 19: brainstorming and definition of the terms; conceiving of the research agenda for the selected entries

December 20: more detailed elaboration of individual contributions; practical assignments - who does what; brief editorial session for the glossary

Bojana Cvejić (Belgrade, 1975) is performance theorist and maker, working in contemporary dance and performance also as dramaturge and performer. She studied musicology and aesthetics at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, and is currently writing a PhD on dance and performance at the CRMEP at Middlesex University in London. Since 2000, Bojana has been based in Brussels, where she has developed a theater practice with Jan Ritsema in a number of performances since 1999 (a.o. TODAYulysses, 2000). As dramaturge, she has been collaborating with a number of European choreographers, amongst others Xavier Le Roy, Eszter Salamon and Mette Ingvartsen. Her own performance work includes directing five experimental opera performances, most recently Mozart’s Don Giovanni (BITEF, 2008). Cvejic has been teaching performance theory and history in P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, and is lecturer at the Theatre Studies department of the Utrecht University. She also has been active in public talks, lectures and teaching in a number of other European educational programmes. She organized independent platforms for theory and practice in performance: TkH (Walking Theory in Belgrade), PAF (performingARTSforum in St. Erme, France) and most recently 6MONTHS1LOCATION (CCN in Montpellier).
